Germinate

An Online Journal

ger·mi·nate

ˈjərməˌnāt/
verb

to sprout from a seed.

Once a semester, the Academy Media Arts Department publishes the online journal Germinate. Comprised of creative writing, film, and animation, the journal is meant to highlight the work of professional writers, filmmakers, and animators, as well as amateurs within and outside The Academy community. The journal ultimately provides a published platform for storytellers.

Each edition will feature work from:

1. Professionals working in the Media Arts

2. Academy Alumni

3. Academy Students

4. Submissions from students outside The Academy, grades 6-12.

The journal is curated by the Academy Media Arts Department and published twice a year.

Submissions

Germinate is always looking for compelling work from young artists (grades 6-12). If you are interested in submitting your work for consideration, please complete the form below. Be sure to include a parent email address. For film and animation pieces, please provide a YouTube or Vimeo link. Creative writing pieces can take the form or short story, poem, or screenplay. Please also provide no more than 200 characters telling us about yourself. Have fun with this!

“What exists in our collected Media Arts subconscious to generate this word? Chosen by Academy students to represent their written work and images, germinate can simply imply growth. Looking closer and from a more holistic perspective, I begin to see other relationships emerge. Fertile grounds, proper care, sufficient light, root systems: metaphors extend, wildly.

Germinate holds a writer’s, filmmaker’s, and artist’s aspirations, providing the proper conditions for their expressions and visions.

Germinate nurtures our ethos.”
— Fred Schill, Academy Media Arts Chair
