Zelda Werner

Zelda Werner, a remarkable figure in the Chicago arts scene, embarked on her artistic journey later in life than many, and her story is a testament to the enduring power of passion and dedication. Her deep love for the arts led her to make a life-altering decision in her 50s when she decided to return to school to pursue a Master's degree in Fine Arts. From that moment forward, art became the central and driving force in her life.

Zelda's artistic awakening coincided with a pivotal moment in the history of arts education in Chicago. It was at her kitchen table, during heartfelt conversations over cups of coffee, that the seeds of The Academy were sown. It was here that the first Board of Trustees convened, coming together to craft the initial plans that would give birth to The Academy. Zelda, with her keen insight and visionary spirit, recognized the pressing need for an institution that could nurture the talents of young artists. Her determination and unwavering commitment were instrumental in turning this bold idea into a reality, alongside her husband, Louis.

Zelda passed in 1999, but her legacy endures as a testament to her profound impact on the Chicago arts community. In her honor, the Upper Gallery on The Academy’s second floor was named the Louis and Zelda Werner Gallery.

Zelda's memory serves as a poignant reminder that it is never too late to embrace one's passion and leave a mark on the world through the arts. Her legacy will forever be a source of inspiration for generations of artists and creatives.
