Student Clubs & productions
At The Academy, students have opportunities to take part in various extracurricular activities and clubs. Due to our unique schedule, many clubs meet in the middle of the school day during an Advisory period.
Current extracurricular offerings include the following:
Black Student Union
Feminist Theory
Film Club
Gender and Sexuality Alliance
Health and Wellness
Jewish Student Union
Latinx Union
Sustainability Society (Recycling Club)
Youth and Government
Yearbook Club
Yarn and Yap (Fiber & Textile Arts Club)
Additionally, we approach community service through art and our two annual student-produced benefit concerts.
AIDS BENEFIT
Academy students actively lead beyond the classroom through significant projects like the annual AIDS Benefit, a student-directed variety show that has raised over $10,000 for HIV/AIDS research and support since its 1997 inception.
Managing both performance and behind-the-scenes aspects without faculty direction, students have expanded their support to various Chicago organizations including the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and the Chicago House & Social Service Agency, establishing the benefit as a cornerstone of the Academy community.
BLACK HISTORY benefit
The Academy proudly hosts an annual Black History Month showcase and fundraiser organized by the Black Student Union, which featured the theme "Welcome to the House Party!" in 2024, with all proceeds supporting the Musical Arts Institute's music education programs for underserved Chicago youth. Founded in 2018 by two alumni to create an open space fostering community among Black students, the BSU extends beyond this signature benefit to organize various discussions and activities throughout the academic year.
Youth & Government
Student Government Club serves as a platform for students to represent their peers, organize events, and influence school policies or activities. We integrate creative elements—think planning showcases, fundraisers, or interdisciplinary projects—alongside traditional responsibilities like voicing student concerns to faculty.
