The Future of Chicago’s Artists Starts Here and It Needs All of Us

For nearly 50 years, The Chicago Academy for the Arts has been a place where young artists find their voice, refine their craft, and step into their future with confidence. It is where talent meets opportunity regardless of financial circumstance, and where Chicago’s next generation of artists begins.

That mission has not changed. But how we sustain it must.

Today, more than 70% of Academy students receive financial assistance. That commitment to access is not just a value; it is the foundation of who we are. It ensures that our studios, stages, and classrooms reflect the full diversity of artistic voices our city has to offer.

At the same time, a recent financial review has made something clear: to continue delivering on that mission for the next 50 years, we must evolve.

A Strong Plan and Real Momentum

This is not a story of uncertainty. It is a story of action.

In partnership with the Board of Trustees, The Academy has taken meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future. We have realigned our staffing model to reflect our actual enrollment, so that our resources are invested where they serve students most directly. We have rebuilt our tuition assistance process from the ground up, creating a fair, consistent, and transparent system that ensures our financial aid reaches the families who need it most and that we can sustain that commitment for the long term. We have strengthened our financial oversight and controls, implementing systems to prevent these challenges from recurring. And we are building a more comprehensive fundraising strategy, one that diversifies our revenue, deepens our community partnerships, and moves us toward a model where philanthropy funds innovation and growth, not operating losses.

These were not easy decisions, but they were necessary, and they are already making an impact.

At the same time, we are investing in growth:

  • Expanding recruitment across Chicago and beyond

  • Building partnerships with leading cultural institutions

  • Growing middle school, summer, and seasonal intensive programs

  • Opening our spaces for rentals and collaborative programming

We’re viewing this as a recalibration designed to ensure The Academy thrives for decades to come.

Why This Moment Matters

The Academy has always played a vital role in Chicago’s cultural ecosystem. Our alumni are performing on its stages, designing its sets, composing its music, and shaping its creative future.

But across the country, arts institutions are facing increasing pressure. Long-standing organizations are closing their doors, and access to arts education is becoming more limited.

In that landscape, The Chicago Academy for the Arts stands as something increasingly rare: a rigorous, pre-professional arts high school dedicated to developing young artists at the highest level.

Ensuring that pipeline continues is not just important…it is essential.

Experience What’s at Stake: ELEVATE

This spring, we invite the community to experience our impact firsthand at ELEVATE: Chicago’s Artists Start Here — The Academy’s annual all-school showcase.

Taking place at the Studebaker Theater, ELEVATE brings together the full creative force of The Academy for a 90-minute performance featuring:

  • Dance, theatre, and musical theatre performances

  • Live music and jazz ensembles

  • Student films and media work

  • Visual art exhibitions

  • And a special appearance by Academy alum and acclaimed songwriter Justin Tranter

ELEVATE is a celebration of what happens inside The Academy every day and a powerful reminder of why the arts and The Academy matter.

But this year, it is more than a performance. It is an opportunity to support the future of arts education in Chicago and The Academy in a direct and meaningful way.

“The Academy has helped shape the artists and creative leaders who define Chicago’s cultural community,” said Head of School Dr. Melinda Zacher Ronayne. “ELEVATE is a chance to see that talent firsthand—and to help ensure it continues.”

A Community Effort

The Academy is currently working to close a significant funding gap by this summer. With immediate community support, the school is positioned not just to stabilize its underpinnings but to grow stronger, more sustainable, and more impactful than ever.

Over the past decade alone, The Academy has provided more than $15 million in financial assistance, ensuring that talented students can access world-class training regardless of financial circumstance.

That commitment continues, but it requires partnership and support.

How You Can Help

The strength of The Academy has always been its community — families, alumni, artists, and advocates who believe in the power of arts education.

Right now, that support matters more than ever.

Here’s how you can make an impact:

Attend ELEVATE. Bring friends, family, or colleagues. Every ticket supports student artists and the programs that shape them.

Become a sustaining donor. Even $25/month helps fund guest artists, performances, and essential studio materials.

Sponsor student experiences. Events like Prom, Graduation, and senior showcases rely on community support to continue. Contact Director of Advancement Scott Stewart for more information.

Spread the word. Encourage young artists to apply. Enrollment growth is one of the most powerful ways to secure The Academy’s future. Opportunities exist for middle school students, high school students, and postgraduate learning

Give what you can. Nearly half of The Academy’s annual budget is supported by donations. Every gift directly impacts students.

Looking Ahead

The creative work that happens inside The Academy is extraordinary. Our students are bold. Our faculty are deeply committed. Our community is unmatched.

This moment is not about saving something fragile; it is about strengthening something essential.

With the right support, The Chicago Academy for the Arts will enter its 50th year not as an institution holding on, but as one taking bold steps forward — stronger, more sustainable, and more impactful than ever.

Because when young artists rise, Chicago rises with them. And that future is something we can build together.
